Two weeks at the National Cancer Center Japan — Department of Esophageal Surgery
I expected to see an impressive surgical department. What I encountered was something more: a surgical philosophy translated into organised practice. The technique is based on a clearly defined anatomical concept, executed with precision and consistency.
Reproducibility as a principle of quality
What stands out is not only technical excellence — but reproducibility. A system that enables the entire team to perform at a consistently high level.
A culture of open knowledge
Beyond technique, the culture is remarkable. Questions are welcome. Discussions are encouraged. Knowledge is shared openly and systematically. Expertise is not concentrated in a single individual, but is embedded in a team structure that ensures continuity and growth.
Development through shared standards
Being in such an environment means constant development — not driven by pressure, but by shared standards and dedication to oncological quality.
I am grateful for this visit and look forward to continuing to learn from Prof. Dr. Hiroyuki Daiko and his team and to collaborating with them.
